Medical imaging has provided insight into the living body that were not possible beforehand. With these methods a revolution in medical diagnosis and biomedical research has begun. Problematic aspects on the other hand are arising from the highly constructive properties of image production, which use complicated physical and physiological effects. Images are established via highly complicated combinations of technology and contingently chosen mathematical and algorithmic solutions. In addition, image construction follows properties of the human visual and cognitive system to allow for the discrimination of the desired categories. It is no wonder that the visualizations referring to the body also show effects which have no physiological correlation within the body. Still such images are often used as if they were one-to-one correlates of the body. This has impacts, e.g. for their use as standardizing instances, resulting in new definitions of the normed healthy body, sickness or pathologies, maleness and femaleness and in determinisms as opposed to the brain’s plasticity and variability, both in time and space, inter- as well as intra-individually.

Bild gebende Verfahren in der Medizin haben Einsichten in den lebenden Körper verschafft, die vorher ohne invasive Eingriffe nicht möglich waren. Mit diesen Methoden hat eine Revolution in medizinischer Diagnose und biomedizinischer Forschung eingesetzt. Dabei treten andererseits problematische Effekte auf, insbesondere durch die hoch konstruktiven Eigenschaften der Bildproduktion, die komplizierte physikalische und physiologische Effekte ausnutzen. Die Bilderzeugung verwendet komplizierte Kombinationen von Technik und mathematischen und algorithmischen Lösungen. Dazu werden Eigenschaften der menschlichen Kognition und des visuellen Systems für die Konstruktion von Unterscheidbarkeit ausgenutzt. Kein Wunder, dass die Visualisierungen des Körpers auch Effekte vorzeigen, die keine physiologischen Korrelate im menschlichen Körper haben. Dessen ungeachtet werden diese Bilder häufig als eineindeutige Abbildungen des Körpers gesehen. Das hat Folgen, beispielsweise für ihren Gebrauch als Standardisierungsinstanzen. Diese führen zu Definitionen des normierten gesunden Körpers, versus von Krankheit oder Pathologien, von Männlichkeit versus Weiblichkeit, von rassischen Unterscheidungen etc. Dazu werden Determinismen insinuiert, die in Widerspruch zur Plastizität und Variabilität des Gehirns stehen, die sowohl zeitlich wie räumlich, inter- und intra-individuell enorm groß sind.

Ces méthodes ont induit une révolution du diagnostic médical et de la recherche biomédicale. Toutefois, elles génèrent des effets problématiques, dus notamment aux caractéristiques d’une production d’images extrêmement construite, qui utilise des effets physiques et physiologiques complexes. La génération des images recourt à des combinaisons complexes d’appareillages techniques et de solutions mathématiques et algorithmiques. En outre, la construction des images suit les propriétés visuelles et cognitives humaines pour établir les différenciations des catégories visées. Rien d’étonnant alors à ce que les visualisations du corps montrent aussi des effets n’ayant pas de corrélations physiologiques dans le corps. Malgré tout, ces images sont souvent considérées comme des reproductions fidèles du corps. Cela a des conséquences, p. ex. en ce qu’elles servent d’instances de standardisation qui débouchent sur de nouvelles définitions du corps sain normé, de la maladie ou des pathologies, de la masculinité ou de la féminité, des distinctions de race, etc. Par ailleurs sont insinués des déterminismes en contradiction avec la plasticité et la variabilité du cerveau, qui sont très importants dans le temps et dans l’espace tout comme sur le plan inter ou intra-individuel.
