Abstract

1.  Wittrockiella paradoxa Wille, 1909, described from a saline area in Norway, was recently discovered in several saltmarshes in N.W. Europe.
2.  In the Dutch and German Wadden area, in North Norfolk (England) and along the English Channel coast it occurred in living and decaying stems, leaves and branches of saltmarsh phanerogams. Occassionally it was found freely growing among other saltmarsh algae.
3.  The species has a cladophoroid and a rhizoidal form, the latter occurring most frequently.
4.  All N.W. European localities are oligohaline or mesohaline areas in saltmarshes.
