The Mössbauer effect of the second excited state of the
K=1/2 rotational band in Yb
171 at 75.9 keV with
I=5/2 was studied to determine its magnetic moment

=(1.01±0.01)nm. This value agrees well with the one predicted by the previously determined magnetic parameters of the
K=1/2 rotational band, confirming the adiabatic separation of intrinsic and rotational wave functions.
We wish to thank Dr. G.Schatz for producing our first source with the Karlsruhe cyclotron and for suggesting the Tm169(
, 2n)Lu171 reaction as a suitable way to produce Lu171. We wish to acknowledge sincerely the help of H.Wahl in the long source bombardment and of Prof.Bodenstedt who so generously made the Bonn synchrocyclotron available to us. We would especially like to thank Dr.Ursel Zahn for her constant assistance in preparing sources and absorbers.
