In a novel low-cost method for production of high purity Si, a mixed reaction product consisting of Si and NaF is readily
separated by melting. During melting, surface SiO
2 is removed from Si particles by fluxing action of the NaF, thus promoting coalescence of molten Si drops. X-ray diffraction
evidence indicates that a high temperature modification of Na
2SiF
6 is formed as a result of reaction between NaF and SiO
2.
