Abstract

In a novel low-cost method for production of high purity Si, a mixed reaction product consisting of Si and NaF is readily separated by melting. During melting, surface SiO2 is removed from Si particles by fluxing action of the NaF, thus promoting coalescence of molten Si drops. X-ray diffraction evidence indicates that a high temperature modification of Na2SiF6 is formed as a result of reaction between NaF and SiO2.
