Abstract

The eye, and in particular the anterior segment, is one of the very few parts of the body where inflammation can be viewed directly, in vivo and without intervention. The clinical ophthalmologist is familiar with this privilege and uses it not only in diagnosis (i.e. to identify the site and nature of disease), but to monitor disease activity (e.g. to assess whether the inflammation is worsening or improving in response to treatment).
