Abstract

1.  We have prepared O-etbyl carboranylmethylphosphinites and studied their reactions with p-nitrophenyl azide, chlorine, dimethyl sulfate, methyl iodide, chloral, and water. The carboranylmethylphosphinites exhibit greater reactivity than carboranylphosphonites.
2.  The carboranyl group attached to the phosphorus atom has a pronounced electron-acceptor effect, and substituents attached to the second carbon atom of the o-carboranyl nucleus have a weak influence on the overall electronic effect ofthe carboranyl group.
