This report presents an instrument designed asa profile of teacher achievement and teacherneeds with respect to the probability andstatistics strands in the mathematicscurriculum. In developing the profilinginstrument, I had two primary objectives.First, the instrument was to assist in theassessment of teacher achievement in thecontext of the adoption of professionalstandards for mathematics teachers. Second, theinstrument was to assess professionaldevelopment needs for teachers in the light ofchanges to the mathematics curriculum. Thebackground for the development of theinstrument is presented, followed by adescription of the instrument and the resultsof responses to the instrument from 43Australian teachers. Uses for the instrumentand further development possibilities arediscussed.
