Abstract

■ Our current understanding of facial aesthetics has not shown the ability to discriminate between what we find exceptionally beautiful from what is thought to be average.
■ Previous theories such as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Neoclassical Canons and others have concentrated on external landmarks on the face which people place minimal importance on when assessing beauty.
■ A new theory should concentrate on what people find important when they look at someone’s face.
■ The Circles of Prominence, a new theory on facial aesthetics, finds that the iris is the most important element within a face when people assess for beauty.
■ Every shape or distance within the face has an ideal from zero and infinity. Because we spend so much time concentrating on the iris, it is logical that this ideal is the width of the iris. After establishing this, the rest of the elements of facial beauty become more easily to elucidate.
■ A more accurate theory on facial beauty will allow us to improve our patients' lives for the better.
