It was found that the decomposition of wustite after steam oxidation has special characteristics. Slow cooling in steam at 600–800° promotes subsequent rapid decomposition of wustite precedes the formation of a metastable phase that presumably has a cubic lattice similar to that of stable wustite. The interplanar distances and lattice constant of this phase were determined.
