Summary
A review of the few earlier investigations of nitrogen fixation by blue-green algae in temperate soils is presented. The extent of fixation by free-living algae in soil at three locations near Uppsala is discussed and compared with fixation by symbiotic algae living as phycobionts or cephalodia in lichens.
