■ Optic disc drusen (ODD) represent a frequent cause of slowly progressive optic neuropathy.
■ ODD result probably from an abnormal axonal metabolism, leading to mitochondrial calcification at the level of the lamina
cribrosa. Axons rupture and extracellular mitochondria further calcify.
■ Buried (deep) ODD are more commonly seen in younger patients and exposed (superficial) ODD in older patients.
■ Visual field defects are a frequent finding in ODD patients, more so when ODD are exposed.
■ Visual acuity is usually preserved even in advanced but uncomplicated ODD.
■ Visual acuity loss can result from vascular complications such as: anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, central/branch retinal
artery or vein occlusion.
■ The most sensitive diagnostic test for ODD is B-scan ultrasound.
■ There is currently no therapy for ODD.
