Abstract

The dynamics of a free-running ratchet mechanism is analyzed, at high speeds. A dynamic equation for the pawl motion over the tooth profile and in the separation period is derived, permitting evaluation of the ratchet mechanism’s operation with no load and during closure. The stress in end contact may be estimated from a graph of the mutual position of the ends of the pawl and the ratchet tooth during closure.
