A model is discussed for the titanium species, [M], used in reductive couplings (McMurry Synthesis). Evidence is given for the presence of aluminium(0) in [M], generated in the TiCl
3/LiAlH
4 system. Reactions of this [M] with alcohols show
inter alia titanium(III) signals with superimposed Al-splittings in the e.s.r. spectra, thus proving the existence of mixed Ti-Al complexes in the TiCl
3/LiAlH
4/ROH system.
