Publish or Perish. A System and a Mess
G. C. B.Van Wyk
Abstract
This paper adopts the following line of argument. (1) There are many researchers who believe that the editors and reviewers of scientific journals are biased in their selection of manuscripts for publication. (2) An analysis of the publication system as a social activity shows that publication often has more to do with personal issues and perceptions than the dissemination of knowledge. (3) It is left to the biases of an appointed few to determine what shall pass for knowledge and who will be allowed to contribute toward its growth. (4) Critical reflection on the validity of multiple viewpoints is fundamental to the belief system of systems thinking. (5) Systems thinking has an added responsibility to ensure that different viewpoints, cultures, and styles are reflected in their journals.
