With the decoding of the human genome, there is an urgent need for greater understanding of how proteins are synthesized and
how they function. This notion is predicated on the importance of proteins as ultimate arbiters of cell function. Studies
restricted to investigation of changes in mRNA levels do not address changes in proteins and their function. A strict linear
correlation between mRNA levels and proteins does not always exist (1,2). Therefore, it is imperative that protein metabolism be studied directly.
