It is important for the clinician to understand the contributions of both the limbal stem cells and conjunctival disease in selecting the surgical options for a patient’s rehabilitation. As stated before, it is imperative that this concept be understood when evaluating clinical studies comparing treatment modalities, since patients with one stage of disease should be compared only with patients at the same stage.
