Abstract

In several adult specimens of Mugil capito caught in a hypersaline lagoon, an intra-neurohypophyseal channel system lined with coronet cells has been observed. Coronet cells are normally found only in the saccus vasculosus, and in modern Teleostei, this structure is always completely separated from the neurohypophysis. The penetration of coronet cells into the neural lobe, may be an adaptive phenomenon possibly connected with an osmo-protective role of these cells.
