Abstract

The diet of Sargochromis codringtonii was examined by analysis of stomach contents from the juvenile to the adult stage. A size-related dietary shift was evident. Juveniles feed on planktonic crustacea and chironomid larvae. Subadults feed primarily on soft-shelled pulmonates. The diet of adult fish is dominated by the prosobranchs, Melanoides tuberculata and Bellamya capillata. Possible reasons for this observed change in diet are discussed.
