Abstract

Comparative toxicity of indomethacin and piroxicam at low multiples of the human therapeutic dose was studied in inbred albino rats of both sexes. Using the drug-induced model, the two drugs were used to produce gastric ulcers in the rat. Both showed significant evidence of gastric ulceration measured by the ulcer index. The incidence of ulceration increased with dose for both drugs. Piroxicam produced a lower incidence of gastric ulcers than equivalent doses of indomethacin.
