The stage machine used to bring the gods or the heroes of the tragedy on stage, known with the Latin term Deus ex machina was used in some ancient Greek drama, for the solution of an apparently insoluble crisis. This intervention of a god or a hero
brought on stage was possible by this elaborate piece of equipment, the mechane. Archaeological evidence in the ancient Greek theatre of Phlius (Corinthia) was reappraised in an attempt to reconstruct the mechane.
