Abstract

The notion of Umwelt originates in a (continental, ‘anthropological’) tradition of studying the behaviour of animals in their natural environment, contrasting with the (anglo-saxon, behaviorist) tradition of breeding mice in the laboratory and testing their achievements in mazes, that is, in artificial environments. Chapter 1 outlines the contributions of three major European scientists to modern psychophysiology and ethology.
