Numerical analysis of soliton dynamics in highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fibers reveals intriguing scenarios enabling efficient
pulse compression down to single-cycle field waveforms. We derive simple analytical expressions relating the pulse width and
the energy of ultrashort pulses generated through such a field-evolution dynamics to the fiber dispersion and nonlinearity.
